Why We Coach

Our Team

Our mission is to empower individuals, particularly within underserved communities, through comprehensive financial literacy education, transforming money from a source of stress into a powerful tool for achieving personal and economic well-being. We are dedicated to providing accessible and culturally sensitive guidance on essential financial skills, including budgeting, credit and debt management, emergency planning, and future-focused strategies like retirement and college savings, enabling our clients to build lasting financial stability, overcome systemic barriers, and create brighter futures for themselves and their families.

Lori and Sharlene met in college and have always had a shared passion for uplifting their communities. Although their professional paths took them in different directions, their core values remained intertwined. Sharlene, with her expertise in financial inclusion and experience working with underserved communities globally, understood the systemic barriers that perpetuate financial disparities. Lori, with her background in urban affairs and community development, witnessed firsthand the impact of financial instability on families and neighborhoods.

Despite their different focuses, both Sharlene and Lori recognized a common thread: a lack of accessible financial education was a significant roadblock to progress within their communities. Lori, having tackled her own $35,000 credit card debt, understood the emotional toll of financial struggle. Sharlene, coming from an immigrant background, knew the power of demystifying money conversations.

Driven by a desire to make tangible change, they decided to join forces. They embarked on a journey to become certified financial health coaches, leveraging their combined experience and expertise.  Through Prosperity Village, their mission is clear: to empower individuals and communities with the knowledge and tools to build financial resilience, breaking down the taboo surrounding money and creating pathways to lasting economic stability.

Lori Hylton and Sharlene Brown are certified financial health coaches with a combined 35 years of experience in empowering communities through financial education.

Lori, Director of Strategic Programming at Freedmen Heirs Foundation, brings a wealth of knowledge from her roles in affordable housing, community development, and her work on the 'Financial Health in the Pews' program. She leverages her personal experience overcoming financial struggles to make money management accessible to all.

Sharlene, with a background in economics and an MBA, has spent nearly a decade helping clients, especially from underserved communities, build strong financial foundations. Her expertise spans racial equity, economic empowerment, and initiatives that support farmers in emerging markets. Together, Lori and Sharlene are dedicated to bridging the financial literacy gap and empowering individuals to achieve lasting financial resilience.
